Centre-right parties set to defeat incumbent socialists but fall well short of a majority, exit polls suggest
Portugal’s centre-right is heading for the narrowest of victories over the incumbent Socialists but has fallen well short of an outright majority in a snap general election in which the far-right Chega party has finished third, almost tripling its share of the vote and becoming a potential kingmaker.
With 98% of Sunday’s votes counted, the Democratic Alliance – an electoral platform made up of the large Social Democratic party (PSD) and two smaller conservative parties – was first with 29.8% of the vote, followed by the Socialist party on 28.6%.
